#TeamBeautiful will be hosting a screening of “1982” at Brooklyn Academy Of Music this Saturday, March 29, 2014 as a part of New Voices In Black Cinema, presented by ActNow Foundation, in partnership with BAMcinematek. This Tommy Oliver directed film is an emotional debut that chronicles a Philadelphia father’s struggle to protect his daughter from the reality of her mother’s drug addiction. Hill Harper delivers a brilliantly nuanced and powerful performance as a streetwise man on the verge of exploding with rage and fear, alongside Sharon Leal, who gives a chilling portrayal of an addict, and Wayne Brady, who is nearly unrecognizable as a local gangster.

New Voices in Black Cinema (NVBC) is a multi-genre film festival aimed at showcasing and increasing appreciation for independent cinema from and about people of the African diaspora. Choosing excellence over spectacle and daring stories over standard fare, this year’s festival will include one of the most intriguing line ups of films the ActNow Foundation has presented in years. Martin Majeske, Managing Director of ActNow states of the 2014 Festival, “ActNow is extremely excited to be moving into its fourth year with New Voices in Black Cinema. This year’s lineup features fantastic narrative and documentary films that showcase the depth and diversity of the African-American experience, and we can’t wait to share the work of such talented filmmakers with Brooklyn audiences.”
