Dear Tom,

My mom raised 4 girls and 1 boy as a single mother since 1979.  She was working at DuPont but retired 5 years ago and opened up a day care center to make life easier for struggling young mothers and fathers.

Earlier this year, my older sister Melissa was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and hospitalized for a long time.  Because of her condition, she is unable to work and provide for her two young children so my mother took my sister and her kids into her home.

Earlier this year, my mom had knee surgery.  She willed herself back to health and is back on her feet going to physical therapy while running the daycare, caring for my nephews and taking my sister back and forth to her hospital appointments in Atlanta.

About 10 years ago, my mom was pumping gas at a Racetrack and a car at the stoplight across the street started honking.  She ignored it and went inside to pay for her gas.  When she turned around, the driver of the honking car introduced himself.  He asked her for her number, he called her up, they started dating and the next thing you know, they got married in 2005.

My mom has selflessly served others for as long as I can remember and she is more than deserving of special recognition.
