A North College Hill mother is locked up after police said she hit her 11-year-old son 35 times with a belt.

Investigators said the child was left with severe welts and open wounds on his back.

Neighbors told WLWT the mother has been a problem before, and they are not surprised by the arrest.

County investigators said this level of physical abuse is unusual.

North College Hill police said Bhagwana Hasan, 40, hurt her 11-year-old son by hitting him with a “rope-style belt” 35 times.

Investigators said in doing so, Hasan caused severe welts and open wounds on his back, as well as a defensive wound to his right hand.

Officers said it happened on Tuesday at the family’s home on Emerson Avenue.

In a report obtained by WLWT, we learned this only came to light after the boy went to the North College Hill Middle School front office from gym class stating “his hand and back was hurt, and his mother told him that if it started hurting him to call her.”

The report showed that when school officials got a look at his injuries, they called the police.

North College Hill investigators said he told them, “he got into trouble, and his mother hit him with a belt.”

Police said the boy was then taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for treatment.

The report showed when police interviewed Hasan at the school, she admitted she caused the wounds by striking him with a leather braided belt 35 times.

She told police, “he has been building ‘licks’ due to his behaviors at home and at school. ‘5 here, 10 there.’”

Investigators said Hasan admitted she was excessive with her discipline technique.

She is set to be arraigned in court Thursday morning on a charge of endangering children.

Officials with Hamilton County Job and Family Services told WLWT they are working the case.

They said they are working to place the boy with a family member.

Investigators also called this a “serious” and “unusual” case.
