The governor of Louisiana signed a bill that makes assaulting a police officer a hate crime.
Governor John Bel Edwards signed the “Blue Lives Matter” bill into law. The law states that anyone convicted of assaulting police officers, firefighters, or EMS personnel could face up to a $5,000 fine and five years behind bars.
This bill makes Louisiana the first state in the country to expand hate crime laws to vocations.
