Walker Funeral Home Black Business Spotlight

A Georgia native, Watson owned a newspaper called The Jeffersonian where he made declarations about his racist views. In one editorial, Watson referred to blacks as an “inferior being: is not anymore our brother than the apes are”.

Through his publication, Watson built negative hype against suspects that belonged to the racial groups he expressed hatred toward. One example was Leon Frank, the Jewish man found guilty of killing young Mary Phagan in 1913. Frank was arrested and charged, but was kidnapped and lynched before his sentence, which could have been a result of Watson’s anti-Semitic comments in his newspaper.

Thomas Watson died in 1922.
