Duke Energy’s Electric Rates Are Rising. What are your options?

Duke Energy Customers in Ohio Brace for 30% Hike in Electric Generation Costs This June
Starting in June, Duke Energy customers in Ohio who are not enrolled in a government aggregation program or contracted with a different energy supplier will face a 30% increase in electric generation costs, according to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).
The hike could significantly impact electricity bills this summer—just as air conditioners kick into high gear. PUCO Chair Jenifer French is urging Ohioans to be proactive. “Consumers need to be aware of these pricing changes that will affect their bills,” French said. “Now is the time to review your utility bill and understand your options.”
Ohio is a deregulated energy state, meaning customers can choose their electricity or natural gas supplier. Options include staying on the standard service offer from Duke Energy, enrolling in a community aggregation program (where local governments negotiate lower rates), or selecting a plan from a competitive energy marketer.
The Ohio Consumers’ Counsel is also advising residents to shop smart. While comparing rates, it’s critical to read the fine print—watch out for teaser rates that expire quickly, hidden fees, or penalties for early termination.
To help navigate the changes, consumers can use the “Price to Compare” (PTC) listed on their monthly utility bill. This number allows you to directly compare Duke Energy’s current rate with offers from alternative suppliers.
In addition, customers struggling with the rising costs can explore options like:
- Budget billing to average out seasonal spikes
- Payment plans for greater flexibility
- Assistance programs offered through PUCO for income-eligible households
