As Independence Day celebrations kick off across the state, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) is ramping up its presence on roads and highways to keep motorists safe. The agency has announced increased patrols throughout the Fourth of July weekend as part of a statewide effort to crack down on impaired driving and prevent deadly crashes.

Last year, 16 fatal crashes were reported during the holiday period in Ohio—half of which involved drugs or alcohol. In response, troopers are launching a safety blitz that will run through Sunday, focusing on identifying and removing impaired drivers from the roads.

“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday, but we also want everyone to get home safely,” OSHP officials said in a statement. “Plan ahead for a sober ride, whether it’s a designated driver, a rideshare service, or public transportation.”

In addition to targeting impaired driving, troopers will be watching for other dangerous behaviors including speeding, distracted driving, and failure to wear seatbelts. Motorists are reminded that seatbelt use remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect themselves in a crash.

OSHP is also encouraging the public to take an active role in roadway safety. If you see a driver you suspect may be impaired, call 677 to report it to authorities.

With increased traffic and celebrations in full swing, the Patrol’s message is clear: safety comes first. By making smart choices and staying alert, drivers can help ensure this Fourth of July is remembered for all the right reasons.
