The incredible story behind one of the rarest and most controversial albums in music history is coming to Netflix.

“The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable” is a new documentary that follows Dutch-Moroccan rapper Cilvaringz and his journey from being a Wu-Tang Clan superfan to becoming part of the legendary hip-hop group’s inner circle.

Cilvaringz began as a devoted Wu-Tang fan in the 1990s before eventually earning the opportunity to tour with the group and receive mentorship from RZA. His relationship with the Clan would ultimately lead to one of the most unusual projects the music industry has ever seen.

The documentary explores the creation of “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin,” a 31-track Wu-Tang Clan album for which only one physical copy was produced. The concept was designed to challenge how people valued music in the digital era, when streaming had made millions of songs instantly accessible.

The album gained even more attention when it was auctioned for $2 million to pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli, making it the most expensive musical work ever sold at the time. Shkreli’s involvement brought additional controversy and worldwide attention to the already mysterious project.

Oscar-winning director Joanna Natasegara said the Wu-Tang story represents values that remain important today, including “community, talent, tenacity, innovation and love.”

“The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable” will give fans a deeper look at Cilvaringz’s unlikely rise, the creation of the one-of-a-kind album and how a bold Wu-Tang experiment sparked a larger conversation about what music is truly worth.
