Longtime ESPN personality Stuart Scott lost his battle with cancer earlier this year at age 49. His daughters, Taelor, 20, and Sydni, 15, will attend tonight’s ESPY Awards as part of their commitment to raising cancer awareness in the African-American community. Last year, their father gave a moving speech about battling cancer while accepting the ESPY Courage Award.

“We really would like to lend our voices to raise awareness in the African-American community,” says Taelor. “We know that many lack awareness about clinical plans, and we plan to support the Jimmy V Foundation special Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund which support scholars dedicated to improving the lives  and outpatient care of cancer patients who are minorities.”

Although people knew Scott as both a sportscaster who brought the terms ‘Cooler than the other side of the pillow’ and “Boo-ya’ into the sports lexicon, his daughters knew another side of their celebrity, sports-loving father.

“He really loved Broadway musicals. He knew every single word. His favorite musical ever was West Side Story and he saw Wicked eight times. Every available moment he would sing the songs,” they said. “He seemed like this big sports guy, but at every available moment he would be singing those songs.”

The ESPYS air on ABC tonight, July 15 at 8 p.m.
