At home, Wanda Sykes is a normal, gay, suburban wife and a mother with 6-year-old twins. The twins and her wife are all French, which makes Sykes feel sometimes that she needs a passport to get into her own house. But to millions of fans, Sykes is best known as a comicand this season on Last Comic Standing, she’s using those skills to mentor others.

“I’m the executive producer,” says Sykes. “Our production company is producing that show. Before they went to the semifinals I mentored all the comics. It was a 10-hour day and we only go to use two minutes of it. It was cool. The comics that wanted to collaborate and listen, they did well. But the others, well, somebody’s got to go home.”

One of her mentees was The Tom Joyner Morning Show’s own Dominique, who Sykes says did very well on the show.

“I’m just going to say she did very, very well. She got far. A lot of the comics I’m familiar with. If they hear me saying something [they listen] but some folks you can’t say anything to, it gets all in their head. You can be real funny in a tweet, but when you get live….”

One routine that’s working for Wanda is her take on Beyoncé. She says the singer/superstar needs to go back to the old days when her mother made her clothes and every outfit had a bow.

“All she’s doing is drinking and doing it, that’s it. I don’t know what’s going on at her house. She talking about ‘I woke up like this’ – ain’t no way you can wake up like that with a kid. All that drinking and doing it, who’s watching the kid?”

Last Comic Standing airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m.
