In 2006, Spann and several of his Tuskegee Airmen comrades were honored by President George W. Bush with the Congressional Medal of Honor, which is the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Spann is survived by his wife, Gwenelle, and his adult children, Gai Spann, Carla Spann-Lopez, and Calvin J. Spann Jr. and his grandchildren.

A public viewing service was held in Carrollton, Texas this past Saturday in full military fashion. Spann’s remains and his immediate have been flown to New Jersey via American Airlines for a final viewing in his hometown of Rutherford, N.J. to be held on Monday. On Tuesday, Spann will be laid to rest in the city of Clifton, New Jersey.

The family is requesting that donations be made to a GoFundMe account in Spann’s honor. The donations will be used to help with Spann’s final arrangements and medical expenses.
