It was announced this afternoon that the television reboot of the 1989 comedy classic will not be renewed for a second season.
Another one bites the dust. Hollywood can be pretty cutthroat when it comes to nixing projects before they even have a chance to get started and ABC’s Uncle Buck is the latest casualty. It was announced this afternoon that the television reboot of the 1989 comedy classic will not be renewed for a second season.
As reported by Shadow and Act via Deadline, ABC officially confirmed its decision to cancel the freshman series after just one season, approximately eight episodes aired since its June 14th debut with back-to-back airings each Tuesday, despite solid ratings for a summer sitcom.
The details of the cancellation state:
ABC’s freshman midseason comedy “Uncle Buck” will not return for Season 2. The news was announced by star James Lesure on Twitter this afternoon and later confirmed by ABC.
The Universal TV-owned series had respectable ratings over its four-week eight-episode run. It improved its hour for ABC vs comparable weeks last year with original programming (first hour of “Extreme Weight Loss”) by 81% in total viewers (3.8 million vs. 2.1 million) and doubled the slot in adults 18-49 (1.2/4 vs. 0.6/2).
Based on the hit movie of the same name, the title character Uncle Buck (played by Mike Epps) is a charismatic hustler who has gotten by on his charm for years. But when his brother Will (James Lesure), and sister-in-law Alexis (Nia Long), move to town and need help with their kids, he steps up to become their “manny.”
It’s unfortunate that this funny and endearing family show wasn’t given more time (or at least a better time-slot, such as the fall) to grow and develop a strong fan-base. It would have been nice to see it paired with Black-ish during the upcoming fall season, as both shows offered a similar tone.
Nevertheless, stars Mike Epps and Nia Long are likely to find other work pretty quickly, so here’s hoping it won’t be too long before we see them gracing our screens both big and small in the near future.
Tell us, are you sad to see Uncle Buck go?
