BERLIN, Germany (RNN) – Police reported a truck ran into a Christmas market filled with people in Germany Monday, killing 12 people and injuring 48 others.

Berlin police confirmed the number of deaths on its Twitter account. Photos and video shared on social media showed what appeared to be a semi truck crashed into the market.

The police tweeted they have arrested a suspect in the area of the truck and are trying to determine if it is the driver. They reported a passenger in the truck got into the market and a translation from German says he “died on the spot.”

Police said they suspect it was a deliberate attack based on their initial assessment, BBC News reported. Eyewitnesses report the truck hit at about 40 mph and showed no signs of stopping.

“We could hear people, we could hear crashing, it was, it happens so quickly and there was no sign of the truck slowing down at all, it was terrifying,” witness Emma Rushton told CNN.

The market is at Breitscheidplatz, close to the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church on the Kurfuerstendamm, a well-known avenue in the city.

There has been no official word on who was driving the truck.
