A new kind of alien invasion is coming—and this time, it’s unfolding through your screens. The reboot of H.G. Wells’ classic War of the Worlds lands on Prime Video on July 30, reimagined for the digital age and starring Ice Cube in a dramatic new role.
Cube takes on the character of Will Radford, a Homeland Security cyber-security analyst who begins to question the very government he works for after an unexplained and devastating global attack. As paranoia spreads and digital chaos intensifies, Radford finds himself at the center of a terrifying mystery that blurs the line between truth and deception.
Directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Profile), the film brings a unique twist to the iconic alien invasion tale. Instead of classic cinematic perspectives, this version unfolds entirely through phones, computers, and tablets—creating an immersive, found-footage-style thriller that drops viewers right into the heart of the action.
Bekmambetov, known for pioneering screen-based storytelling, draws inspiration from Orson Welles’ 1938 radio broadcast, which famously caused mass panic. “Today,” he says, “if an alien invasion happened, people wouldn’t hear it on the radio—they’d see it through their phones.”
The reboot blends sci-fi, suspense, and timely social commentary, exploring themes of surveillance, misinformation, and digital dependency in a hyper-connected world.
With Ice Cube in a serious, high-stakes role and a narrative style that mirrors our everyday digital reality, War of the Worlds promises to be a bold, relevant reimagining of a timeless sci-fi classic.
