Back in 2014, we touted Los Angeles native Jhené Aiko as one of our five “New Classic Artists” to be on the lookout for. Now a year later, Aiko has proven that she is well on her to being a staple in the music industry for years to come.

Unlike many R&B singers on the scene these days, Aiko strays from the extravagance and big glitzy sets and keeps it simple with a smooth melodic sound accompanied with lyrics that cover heartbreak, motherhood, love and even her Buddhist beliefs. Here’s one song about the death of her brother featuring audio clips from him and her daughter Namiko:

She released her début album Souled Out in September 2014, which debuted with both critical and commercial success. The success of her major label début landed her with three Grammy nods and a new-found fame. Not only were here intimate songs getting major radio play but she was also every rapper’s new favorite hook artist. She’s been featured on songs with Drake, J. Cole, Big Sean and more. Although Aiko didn’t pick up the Grammy for The Worst it’s become her most successful song to date.

Many feel like the mixed race beauty may lack the “it” factor or the big voice, but her fan base thinks that’s what sets her apart. Aiko’s dreamy sound and authentic appeal has built a loyal fan base that has rocketed her from being practically unknown releasing EPs to a singer with a mass appeal and cult-like following.

Check out her most recent single Spotless Mind below.

Fun fact: It stars her ex and the father of her daughter, O’Ryan, who also happens to be the brother of Omarion.

What do you think? Will you be adding Jhene Aiko to your playlist?
