Ever since NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a stand, athletes have been pledging their allegiance to social change by taking a knee during the national anthem, too.

While other teams and sports have just a few players taking a stand, a WNBA team decided to move as one. Before a playoff game against the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night, the entire Indiana Fever took a knee during the national anthem.

After the game, Fever player Marissa Coleman decided that under the brightest of light in the sport, something had to be done.

It was unanimous that we were going to do it together,” she said. “We have a platform, and I think it’s a disservice if we don’t use it. This was bigger than basketball. As important as this game was, there are other things going on in this world. It’s just to get conversations started.”

Coleman also said the Fever head coach told the team she was proud of the stand her players were taking,

The first thing she said to us in the huddle before the game started was how proud she was of us for doing it. I’m proud to be part of this organization,” concluded Coleman.
