Rihanna Brings Smurfette to Life in Upcoming The Smurfs Movie: “It Was a Win-Win for Everyone”

Rihanna is taking her talents to the big (and very blue) screen, lending her voice, creative vision, and musical genius to the upcoming animated film The Smurfs, set to hit theaters on July 18. Not only is the global superstar voicing the iconic Smurfette, but she’s also stepping into the role of producer, making this a deeply personal and multifaceted project.

For Rihanna, the connection to The Smurfs runs deep. “I used to wake up early to watch the show,” she shared, describing how her childhood love for the series influenced her portrayal of Smurfette. Far from being just the token female in the group, Rihanna sees Smurfette as “a powerful, independent, and empathetic character who loves music”—a reflection, perhaps, of Rihanna herself.

In developing Smurfette’s voice and personality, Rihanna pulled inspiration from the real-life women who shaped her growing up. Their strength, compassion, and spirit are now woven into the character’s DNA. “It was invigorating and exciting for me to not only embody a character but also bring my musical life into the mix,” Rihanna explained. “We worked with music producers and choreographers whose work I admire. To put those two worlds together was a win-win for everyone. It pushed us all to challenge our artistry.”

With her signature style, heartfelt approach, and undeniable star power, Rihanna is reimagining Smurfette for a new generation. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the world of Smurfs, this summer’s release promises something special: a blend of nostalgia, empowerment, and the unmistakable touch of RiRi.

The Smurfs opens in theaters July 18—and yes, it’s officially on our must-watch list.
