When referencing “12 Years A Slave” breakout star Lupita Nyong’o, the words: beautiful, gorgeous and flawless often follow her name. She represents much more than just a Black woman on the rise, but a particular group of women, who have sun-kissed dark skin who’ve been shunned out of the mainstream.
Lupita’s rise to fame has a lot to do with her style, her acting skills (of course) and her rich chocolatey skin. With award season in full bloom, and Lupita up for the honor of “Best Supporting Actress,” “BET Takes Hollywood” caught up with the rising star, who dished on how her image has helped empower other women who look like her.
“The thing about having your image projected on many screens all over the world is that your image becomes something bigger than you, it has a life of its own. And that life is inspiring young, dark-skinned or any complexion people to see beauty differently is a powerful thing.”
Catch Lupita’s full interview on “BET Takes Hollywood” that airs directly following BET Honors on Monday, February 24 at 11:00 P.M. ET/PT.
