Legendary Houston pianist Joe Sample passed away on Friday according to a statement released by his wife and son on Facebook. Sample grew up in Houston’s Fifth-ward and was influenced early on by Zydeco music.
Joe Sample formed the Jazz Crusaders, the group fused jazz, soul and funk. By the 1970’s the name was changed to the Crusaders and became a widely successful crossover act giving us many hits including “Street Life” featuring Randy Crawford and “Hippies On A Corner”.
